Students raise funds

Posted on 10 February 2014

Education students raised money to provide Ugandan children with education facilities as part of the 50 years of Education at York celebrations.

The fundraising activities included a ‘Bake Off’ competition with goods being sold on campus. A raffle was also held by the students, who are all members of the Education Society.

In total over £370 was raised for The Henry van Straubenzee Memorial Fund, a UK registered charity which aims to lift Ugandan children out of poverty through education.

We were well supported in our efforts by academics in the Department.

Third Year Education student Jessica Russell said, “As we are Education students and hoping to make a change ourselves, we felt it was a charity that was close to our hearts. We wanted to help make that change. We were well supported in our efforts by academics in the Department, especially Dr Claudine Bowyer-Crane.”

Education Senior Lecturer Dr Claudine Bowyer-Crane said, “"It was great to see our students working together and having fun but with the serious aim of giving better educational opportunities to others."

Education Society students also took part in Operation Christmas Child’s shoebox appeal, collecting boxes from fellow students to be distributed to children around the world.
