Science busking outside the classroom

Posted on 9 June 2014

PGCE students have been demonstrating practical science at the Tour de France Grand Depart and York Festival of Ideas.

A PGCE Student demonstrates and experiment

The students designed and carried out experiments, using simple and everyday materials, that could be repeated by non-specialists, including parents, to encourage young people to engage in science education.

Abigail Allen, John Dunwell, James Keegans and Mathilde Hazenberg applied to work on the Festival project as part of the PGCE Professional Enrichment module, aimed at giving students experience outside of school environments.

They worked alongside colleagues from the National Science Learning Centre and the University of York’s Centre for Lifelong Learning on the activities, and were also joined at the Festival by fellow trainee teachers who were working with Flamingo Land on education outreach.

The opportunity to be involved in the Grand Depart at York Racecourse arose following the students’ success at engaging and entertaining people at the York Festival of Ideas Science out of the Lab event.
