Posted on 19 May 2014

The Department is to host US Professor Elizabeth Burroughs, who has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to share best practice in mathematics education.

As a Fulbright Scholar, she will develop and teach an undergraduate module on current issues in mathematics education, lead a research seminar in mathematics education, and develop mathematics teaching resources to support the National STEM Centre.

Professor Burroughs, who will arrive in August, is an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana.

Her research is focused on the preparation and continued professional development of primary and secondary school mathematics teachers.

Professor Burroughs (known as Beth), is a former high school mathematics teacher with a BA in English and Mathematics from the University of North Carolina and an MA and PhD in Mathematics from the University of New Mexico. She is the Principal Investigator of the Examining Mathematics Coaching Project, a National Science Foundation–funded project researching mathematics classroom coaching. She is also the chair of the Mathematical Association of America’s Committee on the Mathematical Education of Teachers.

Professor Burroughs’ husband and three school-age sons will accompany her to York.
