PGCE team receives VC Teaching Award 2020

Posted on 17 December 2020

The PGCE team have been awarded a 2020 Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Award based on their sustained excellent teaching over a number of years.

This was awarded specifically for their creative, caring and responsive approach to teaching and learning support during the 2019-20 Covid crisis.

The success of the PGCE programme is down to the hard work and uncompromising eye on quality that the team of academic tutors and administrators has. This sustained excellence in teaching has been recognised through nominations for YUSU Excellence Awards, with five PGCE colleagues being nominated for awards over the past three years. The team’s sustained excellence is also evidenced by successive positive external examiner reports which have commented on the team’s commitment to research-led teaching.

The course makes a continuing positive contribution to the local community and the wider region, through its high levels of employment in local and regional schools. Trainees consistently contribute to widening participation work in local schools, celebrating their subject specialism as well as encouraging university ambitions. Colleagues in the team are often pioneers in using creative approaches to teaching support.

PGCE student feedback perhaps captures the spirit and ethos of the team’s work best: “The Core leadership, kindness, and support - both during and outside of the Covid19 crisis – has been second to none. They have brought us through this course, championing excellence through kindness.”
