Institute of Physics award for leading science educator

Mary Whitehouse has won the Lawrence Bragg Medal for her outstanding contributions to physics education.

Mary has influenced the development of teaching and learning in physics on a national scale, both through her central involvement in curriculum projects and in developing the assessment process. Her work has directly improved the quality of physics education around the UK, informing better courses with better resources, with meaningful and effective assessment.

She was praised by the IOP for her "consistent and clear-sighted" approach to developing educational resources and assessment frameworks, which has sparked new innovations in teaching at GCSE and A level in the UK. Two specific projects, Advancing Physics and Twenty First Century Science, were noted for their international impact.

Mary is an active member of the physics education community, through the Association for Science Education and the Institute of Physics, where she recently served on Council.

The gold medal is accompnied by a prize of £1,000 and a certificate. It is named after Sir Lawrence Bragg, who had an international reputation for the popularisation and teaching of physics.
