1990s

The 1990s saw Ian Lister step down as Head of the Department in 1995 after 21 years in the role; Ian Lister remained in the Department of Education until his retirement in 2000. Bob Campbell became the new Head of the Department in 1995.

The 1990s also saw the Department of Education expand further with the launch of a new BA in Educational Studies degree. This new degree dedicated to the study of education would give students the chance to explore a variety of issues in the field of education and to reflect critically on the aims and values of education.

The University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG) contributed to Beyond 2000: Science Education for the Future, which was published in 1998. This report would set in motion changes to the way that science is taught at GCSE level in the UK.

The University of York and the Department of Education celebrated their 30th anniversary with a weekend of celebrations in the summer term of 1994.
