Gender inequalities in clinical academic careers

Posted on 7 June 2019

Jess Morgan, NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Oncology at CRD and Professor Gabrielle Finn, Director of the Health Professions Education Unit at the Hull York Medical School (HYMS) are collaborating on a new research project to understand the experiences, barriers and motivators of those who enter a clinical academic career pathway, with a specific focus on gender imbalances.

The project is called "From the sticky floor to the glass ceiling and everything in between: a qualitative review focusing on gender inequalities in clinical academic careers" and is funded by a collaboration of the NIHR Academy, the Academy of Medical Science, Cancer Research UK, Health Education England, Medical Research Council, and the Wellcome Trust.

The study aims to understand the experiences of clinical academics from a fully representative sample, including trainees to more senior clinical academics. The project is a 4-phase study consisting of: (1) a systematic review, (2) in-depth telephone/skype interviews, (3) audio diaries and (4) dissemination including workshops and written outputs. The work is starting now and is due to be completed in summer 2020.
