Speaker(s): Professor Glyn Stacey, Director of the UK Stem Cell Bank
Glyn has a background in microbiology and cancer research and has worked on the development of cell substrates for manufacture of biological medicines. He is currently Head of Division of Cell Biology and Imaging and Director for the UK Stem Cell Bank, a licensed clinical tissue bank, at the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control at South Mimms, UK.
The work of his group covers safety and quality issues in cell therapy, cells used for manufacturing purposes, development of novel cell-based assays and the development of reference materials for tissue typing and diagnosis of genetic disorders. This work includes the need for scale up of preservation techniques and long term storage of DNA and cell lines of various types including human stem cell lines and cells used in bioassays and vaccine production.
Glyn is PI on a number of EC funded consortia working on suitability and standardisation of stem cell lines for toxicology and drug discovery and also chaired phase the scientific advisory board for phase 1 of the Stem Cells for Safer Medicine public private partnership. Glyn has lead the International Stem Cell Banking Initiative on pluripotent stem cell banking, contributed to the UK Stem Cell Therapy Road Map (DH 2012) and also coordinated the NIBSC Open Forum on Stem Cells (1998-2001) which coordinated discussion amongst bone marrow an cord blood processing centres on the then new regulations on tissue banking in the UK which were a forerunner to the EU Tissue and cells Directive (2006).
