Biography

Agnieszka Trzeciakiewicz is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in Accounting and Finance at the University of York’s School for Business and Society. She also serves as an Associate Editor of the International Review of Financial Analysis. She joined University of York as Lecturer in Accounting and Finance in 2022, having previously worked as a Lecturer in Finance at the University of Hull.

Her research interests are in corporate finance and corporate governance, with a particular focus on the determinants of corporate failure in its broader sense; from financial distress and bankruptcy to failures of corporate conduct, including unethical behaviour and workplace misconduct. Her research is designed to generate impact beyond academia by addressing issues of relevance to businesses, policymakers and wider society. Her work has been published in leading international journals, including The Accounting Review, British Accounting Review and Corporate Governance: An International Review.

Agnieszka holds a PhD in Finance from the University of Hull and is a Fellow of Higher Education Academy.

Alongside her research and teaching, Agnieszka is committed to fostering an inclusive academic environment. As a working mother of two, she brings personal experience of balancing an academic career with caring responsibilities, which has shaped her commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education.

Research

Overview

Agnieszka’s research lies at the intersection of corporate finance and corporate governance. Her overarching research agenda seeks to understand the determinants of corporate failure in its broadest sense, encompassing both financial failure and corporate irresponsibility. In particular, her work examines the financial, governance and behavioural mechanisms that contribute to financial distress, unethical corporate conduct, workplace misconduct and other adverse outcomes for firms and their stakeholders.

Her research has been supported by funding from the British Academy, ICAEW, the University of Hull and the University of York. Her work has also received recognition through best paper awards from the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) and the International Corporate Governance Society.

Agnieszka is particularly interested in research that can generate impact beyond academia. Her work on corporate misconduct has attracted international media and practitioner attention, with research featured by outlets including Bloomberg, The Accountant, Yahoo and Columbia Law School’s Blue Sky Blog.

Teaching

Agnieszka has over a decade of experience in designing, delivering and leading undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in finance, including executive education. At SBS, she has held programme leadership responsibilities across the MSc Finance Suite, alongside teaching in corporate finance, corporate governance and investment. 

Her approach to teaching combines academic research with practical application, using contemporary case studies, real-world financial decision-making and research evidence to help students connect financial theory with practice. She is particularly committed to creating an engaging and inclusive learning environment and to supporting students in developing the analytical and critical-thinking skills required for both professional practice and further academic study.

Her teaching has consistently received positive student feedback, and she has been nominated for teaching awards at both the University of Hull and the University of York.
