Posted on 4 August 2020

First-year PhD candidate Kelli Kennedy features work on food banks and COVID-19 at the Political Studies Association (PSA) Early Careers Network virtual conference, co-winning an award.

Kelli Kennedy created a video presentation for the Political Studies Association’s Early Careers Network #BecauseTheInternet conference, which took place between 13-24th July.

Kelli’s video presentation entitled, “Food Banks and COVID-19: a Comparative Policy Study of Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States” featured in the Pandemic Politics panel of the event. Her presentation discussed how food banks became part of the Government response to COVID-19 in the three countries and the policy process that may have led to this.

The conference brought together 249 PhD students and early-career professionals virtually to present their research, to receive feedback, and network. Overall the conference selected 90 presentations from across the globe, using a ‘content-delivery’ approach where short, 15-minute videos were uploaded and anyone registered for the conference could view, comment, and engage.

Kelli co-received the award for Outstanding Relevance to Current Events.

Dr Carolyn Snell, who is supervising the PhD said "Kelli's research offers an essential and timely insight into how the most vulnerable in society may struggle to access essential food during such difficult times, this is a must watch presentation."
