Welcome to YorStory

‘YorStory’ is about your York story. It is all about the lived experiences of those who have interacted with the University of York over the last 60 years and for those who would like to learn more about the University's history. With the University’s forthcoming 60th anniversary and the 70th anniversary of the Borthwick Institute for Archives, we want to bring to light and share some of the stories and achievements of the University and its students, as well as some important and underrepresented histories.

Who we are

At the Borthwick Institute we hold hundreds of records documenting university life - from staff newsletters and annual reports to student newspapers and oral histories. We believe in the power of this information to inform and inspire, and would love to link the archives to those whose stories they tell (or omit), and create a dialogue with those who have an interest in this history.

What we do

Through a series of social media posts during 2023 we will explore stories and material based on the archives of the student newspaper ‘Nouse’ and bring them to life in a new and engaging way. We have dug through our records to provide you with the most interesting facts, trivia, and events the University has to offer over the past 60 years. You can find our stories on Twitter (@UoYBorthwick), on Instagram (@uoyresearchcoll) and on Facebook.

60th anniversary

Black logo on a white background, stating '60 years'

In this 60th anniversary year we want to help the University in celebrating how far we've come, providing inspiration for future research or actions, and to join in valuing and supporting our people, partnerships and communities. We want to showcase the archives as a means to learn about and engage with this history.

How you can get involved

We need your support! The easiest way to support us is to engage with our social media content. If you like something, retweet it, heart it, comment. If you want to share your story - do it! If you have material from your time at the University you would like to donate to the archive, please contact university-archive@york.ac.uk.

This campaign is driven by the people it’s about. Share #YorStory.
