Posted on 11 January 2018

200 years of mental health history from the Retreat Archive is now available to view online

A project to digitise The Retreat archive is now complete. Well over 650,000 digital images have been captured by the project team and these images are freely available to view online via the Wellcome Collection website.

Browse The Retreat archive through the Borthwick Catalogue and follow the links within the catalogue to the digital content for references of interest.

The archive of The Retreat is unusally complete and includes administrative, financial, staff, estate and patient records and consists of bound volumes, loose papers, maps, photographs and paintings.

Approximately 80% of the catalogued archive is available to view online. Material relating to patients dating from 1920 to the present day was excluded from the digitisation project.

More information about the project can be found on the Digitisation of the Retreat Archive project page.

This project was generously funded by the Wellcome Collection.
