I joined the Hitchcock lab in 2018, as a Research Associate in Structural Biology and Biophysics, to work on unpicking the molecular mechanisms underlying aberrant activation of JAK2 by the V617F mutation. I have a particular interest in protein kinases, membrane proteins and structure-guided drug discovery, inspired by work on G-protein coupled receptors as a graduate research assistant at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge and doctoral studies on cell cycle kinase regulation at the Laboratory of Molecular Biophysics in Oxford, and building on extensive experience gained over 12 years as a structural biologist at AstraZeneca, followed by more than 4 years at the Newcastle Cancer Centre, Newcastle University. I use my knowledge of protein structure to design protein fragments and point mutants for recombinant expression in insect, mammalian or bacterial cells. I then work closely with others in the Hitchcock lab, as well as our collaborators at the University of Osnabruck in Germany, to achieve their functional characterisation.
