Arrangements for workers with diagnosed latex allergy

  • Those individuals with a known latex allergy must inform their line manager / supervisor so that local arrangements (see below) can be put in place to minimise the risk of exposure to all latex products including latex gloves
  • The University Occupational Health Advisor  should also be contacted, if necessary, for advice on any additional necessary precautions to minimise exposure.

Local arrangements to consider could include:

  • provision of gloves (and other personal protective equipment) that does not contain latex to minimise the possibility of exposure.
  • placing a ban on the use of latex gloves within a lab to prevent any inadvertent exposure of the allergic person to traces of latex on shared equipment, door handles etc (especially important if a worker is highly sensitised to latex e.g. latex exposure has caused an asthma attack, anaphylactic reaction, or widespread urticaria (nettle rash)).
