Biology alumni

Welcome back to the Department of Biology

If you're a Department of Biology graduate, get in touch to let us know where you are and what you've been up to since leaving - no matter how recently or how long ago you left!

Share your good news with us. We want to hear about your success stories, interesting career journeys and personal achievements. Have you achieved a long-held ambition? Have you changed career direction completely? Have you worked in any amazing locations? Do you have any advice to offer our current students?

How you can get involved

Alumni are really valuable to helping the careers of our current students. Depending on how much time you can give to us there are many ways you can get involved:

  • Have an email conversation with students about your career journey or become a mentor through York Profiles and Mentors.
  • Come into the department and talk to students about the sector you work in and your career. We run careers events throughout the year for our undergraduate and postgraduate students. We also run Coffee and Careers, a monthly seminar series for staff and students, where a graduate shares their career path showcasing the different career options available to those that have studied biosciences.
  • Share your story by providing a profile to inspire future alumni of the department.

If you interested in providing an alumni profile or coming in to give a talk please email us at biology-naturalsciences-engagement@york.ac.uk

50 Years of Biology at York

On Friday 21 June 2013, as part of the University of York Alumni Homecoming Weekend and the celebrations around the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the University, the Department of Biology held an Alumni Colloquium. The day featured a series of talks from our prestigious alumni given to an audience of students, current/retired staff, and alumni. Talk sessions were chaired by past Heads of Department. The day finished with a drinks reception and recollections. This event also saw the launch of "A History of the first fifty years of Biology at York" edited by Mark Williamson and David White.
