Reconfigurations of STEAM Education in the Age of AI
Supervisors: Dr. Marian Ursu & Dr. Abi Evans
This research investigates how generative AI is reshaping teaching and learning within STEAM education, with particular attention to creativity, human–AI interaction, and learner agency. As AI becomes increasingly capable of performing tasks that previously required technical knowledge and skills, the research asks how educators can distinguish between uses of AI that substitute for meaningful learning and those that extend learners’ capacity to realise ideas, solve problems, and engage in creative practice. The study will explore teachers’ perspectives on the opportunities, challenges, and concerns surrounding generative AI in STEAM education and investigate how human and AI capabilities can interact within creative learning activities. Ultimately, the research seeks to contribute to a person-centred understanding of AI-supported STEAM education in which AI extends human capabilities without displacing the knowledge, judgement, creativity, and agency central to learning.
Richie Ho is a PhD researcher in Theatre, Film, Television and Interactive Media at the University of York, where he previously completed an MSc in AI for the Creative Industries. His background is in English education, with experience in bilingual education, technology-enhanced learning, and educational projects involving primary-school learners. He has contributed to bilingual CLIL textbook development and promotion, visual arts education research, and technology-enhanced language learning using virtual reality and educational robotics. He also has experience in video production and editing and has worked as a stage manager and coordinator for educational programmes. His current research brings these interests together by exploring the intersection of generative AI, STEAM education, creativity, and Human–AI interaction.
