Installation art as sensory space: what artists can contribute to accessible art experiences
Supervisor: Mariana Lopez
My project proposes a pioneering exploration of sensory spaces in installation art. Through case studies, it will analyse techniques for precise sensory activation, while semi-structured interviews will uncover divergent perspectives among artists, institutions, and disabled people regarding accessibility needs.
The goal is to empower artists to enhance sensory intentionality in their work, fostering inclusive art experiences. Additionally, this research will design an Accessible Art Information Framework, capturing critical data to enable museums to deliver tailored services for disabled visitors, grounded in creators’ original intentions.
I am a Chinese installation artist with a background in sculpture and installation art from my undergraduate and graduate studies. My prior research centered on spatial expression in site-specific works, sensory activation in installations, and the use of unconventional media. Currently, as a PhD researcher, I am exploring ways to integrate installation art with accessible artistic experiences.
Since 2024, my focus has shifted primarily to research, with no new artistic productions underway. I am always happy to offer support to fellow artists and researchers encountering challenges in artistic production or conceptual development.
