Thesis

Thesis Title & Description

A Cartography of Elsewhere-ing: Exploring and visualising the space between connectedness with Nature.

  • Supervisor: Debbie Maxwell

This research aims to identify and explore opportunities for visual place-based interventions and strategies that promote a more positive and sustainable relationship between the human and other-than-human world. It examines and maps how the act and practice of ‘elsewhere-ing’ might shape targeted environments and utilises visual, graphic and cartographic methodologies such as systems of graphic symbols used to convey artifacts and phenomena as a means of interpreting human-environment relationships.

Biography

Biography

My interdisciplinary research and practice spans traditional and contemporary art, design, communication and technology driven applications.

Through an ecological lens, the themes in my work explore subjects of environment, biodiversity, ecology and connectedness to nature. Practice is formed into installation, experiences, and artwork to communicate and amplify our entanglement with the natural world. Early Training as a Graphic Designer at Newcastle College of Art and then Bradford School of Art, built skills beyond traditional drawing generating a passion for new technology. Using both traditional and digital process to communicate ideas and concepts, output through painting, AR, AV and audio driven animation are at the forefront of my practice.

Alongside my research and practice, I am Course Leader and Lecturer for the Foundation degree and BA(hons) Graphic Media Communication programme at University Centre Calderdale College.
