University of York academic at Leveson Inquiry

Moral and political philosopher Professor Sue Mendus, of the Department of Politics and the Morrell Centre for Toleration, gave evidence at the Leveson Inquiry on Monday, 16 July.

In her evidence to the Leveson Inquiry, Professor Sue Mendus argued that freedom of the press cannot be coterminous with freedom of speech.

She said John Stuart Mill's notion that "free speech will deliver the truth" gave the press a very limited defence because an "ordinary" person's views, such as those expressed in a pub, were not given as much weight as those of someone in authority, or those of an institution with significant power such as a newspaper.
