Year abroad

These pages contain all the information you need on your year abroad, be it as an assistant teaching in schools, as a student at a university, or (for students taking German) on an industry work placement. Please refer to the different general categories including information which applies to all the students going abroad and if you need specific information depending on what you are going to do while abroad please refer to the sections detailing the assistantships and the Study Abroad scheme. The Academic Instructions apply to ALL STUDENTS GOING ABROAD so please make sure you read those carefully.

Year abroad options

British Council assistantship

  • You can work as a British Council language assistant in schools
  • You get paid a salary because this is a "job contract"; within Europe you receive an Erasmus grant*
  • short assistantships are available for German-speaking countries and Argentina

Comenius assistantship

  • You work as a Comenius language assistant (a shorter assistantship if you can only go for one semester to a French or Spanish-speaking country)
    Students going on their year abroad in 2013-14 who spend half the year as Comenius assistant and the other half at university or on a work placement in Germany will have to pay £3100 fee. They will receive a bursay of £1100, making the whole amount due £2000.

Industrial work placements

  • Students of German can spend 6 months on an industrial work placement in Germany with renowned companies
  • such as AUDI, Deutsche Welle TV, Deutsche Post, Deutsche Bahn, Deutsche Telekom, MAN Turbo und Diesel etc.
  • All placements are paid and students also receive the Erasmus grant

Erasmus study scheme

  • You can study for a semester or a year at one of our Erasmus partner universities in France, Switzerland, Germany or Spain
  • You will receive the Erasmus grant for studying within Europe

Exchange programme (English Language, Linguistics)

  • Students on three year programmes can also apply for a place on an exchange programme through which students may study abroad for their second year in North America, Australia or Asia.
