Workstream 1:

how many people have open surgical wounds? What type of surgeries lead to open surgical wounds? What treatments do people with open surgical wounds receive? How long does it take for open surgical wounds to heal?

Across the UK we lack basic, important information about open surgical wounds. In this workstream we will:

  • Undertake a short survey over two weeks in Hull and East Riding to find out how many people have open surgical wounds being treated by NHS staff, what type of surgery leads to these wounds and what treatments are being used.
  • Conduct a larger study of people with open surgical wounds within Hull, East Riding and Leeds. We will follow study participants for up to 24 months and during this time will find out what treatments they receive for their wounds and what significant events occur to these patients (e.g. wound healing). We will also ask patients to fill in questionnaires which ask about their health-related quality of life.

This survey took place from 23rd April to 4th May 2012, inclusive. Data was collected from hospital and community settings and GP practices across Hull and East Riding.  All staff in these areas have done a fantastic job and we have currently received over 150 forms. We are in the process of checking and entering data and will then begin the analysis phase. This survey is an important start to this workstream and will provide the first estimates of how many people have open surgical wounds.
