Developing a Centre for the Study of the Social Curriculum Concept and Rationale

Thursday 9 June 2016, 2.00PM

Speaker(s): Dr Tony Breslin

In this session Tony Breslin will make the case for the establishment of a national Centre for the Study of the Social Curriculum (CSSC), and outline its first project: to critically explore the current social curriculum as delivered through a range of competing, overlapping and often unconnected conduits: citizenship, PSHE, SMSC, "Fundamental British Values", wellbeing, character education, Careers Education and Guidance and so on. Educators need a national conversation about what the objectives and core content of a new social curriculum should be, and a National Centre could host this, and pull together a range of key voices and interest groups. In exploring these issues Tony will draw on recent work with the RSA on their 2014 report on SMSC, Schools with Soul, current work with Oasis Community Learning and his experience as a former Chair of the Association for the Teaching of the Social Sciences and a former Chief Executive at the leading education and participation charity, the Citizenship Foundation.

Dr Tony Breslin is Director of the consultancy Breslin Public Policy Limited, Founding Director of the participation campaign Use Your Vote, and Chair of the Awarding Body, Industry Qualifications.
