Mastering modality in a second language

Wednesday 25 January 2017, 1.00PM to 2.00pm

Speaker(s): Nadia-Mifka-Profozic, Centre for Research in Language Learning and Use

Modality is a fundamental conceptual domain which exists in all natural languages, but it is instantiated differently across different languages and therefore presents a complex learning problem for L2 learners.

In this research seminar the results of a study will be presented which sought to examine how fairly advanced Croatian learners of English (CEFR level B2 - C1) comprehend and process a selection of modal verbs. L2 acquisition of modal auxiliaries canand mayis investigatedwith reference to their differing meanings, i.e. giving or asking permission, expressing ability, and expressing epistemic possibility. The participants completed an acceptability judgment test and a self-paced reading task.

The results point to the complexity of modal semantics, the related problems in L2 acquisition, and the distinction between explicit knowledge and implicit processing.
