Universities and elite outcomes in Britain: Evidence from the Great British Class Survey

Wednesday 12 November 2014, 1.00PM to 2.00pm

Speaker(s): Paul Wakeling, Centre for Education on Social Justice

Entry to elite universities in Britain is known to be sharply divided on social class lines. It also known that the type of university attended has an impact on very early graduate labour market experiences and entry to higher degrees. However studies of the longer term outcomes for graduates of different universities tend to focus on particular professions or institutions. Paul will present data on over 85,000 graduates from the Great British Class Survey which shows clear differences in outcomes between different kinds of universities and hierarchies even within the elite Russell Group of institutions. The implications of these findings for understanding the relationship between higher education and social mobility will be considered.
