Progress

Langwith College is making rapid progress in preparation for the beginning of the next academic year.

Construction on the blockwork and roof works have been completed. Windows are installed and work has begun on the landscaping and cycle storage areas.

The student social building is also taking shape. This will provide access to an on-line ATM, YUSU student bar and a laundry.

Progress on the interiors is also happening. Completed sections have been painted and decorated, carpets are going down and bedroom and kitchen furniture is being installed in blocks A,B and K.

The selection of single cluster and studio rooms, town Houses and on-suite student rooms are on track for completion in August 2012 ready for the September / October in-take of students.

The facilities

Langwith College will provide self-catered accommodation for 645 students.  Costing £30 million, this new facility is being constructed on the eastern side of the central vista on Heslington East, facing Goodricke College, and just to the south of of the bus interchange.  It consists of a number of large blocks forming the perimeter and smaller blocks of town houses in the middle, with a social Centre building at the heart.

Langwith accommodation is designed to provide a variety of living experiences to suit new first-year undergraduates through returning students in their second, third or fourth years, to postgraduate students studying on masters courses or PhDs.

Langwith is just one of many projects currently being undertaken by the University of York. We are part-way through a series of developments to enhance our student facilities on campus with a total planned investment of over £750m.

The design

Ariel view of langwith

The College is designed round four informal irregularly shaped courtyards, which will be separately named after people who have been important in shaping or supporting the University over the years.

The larger buildings round the edge have corridors of 12 en-suite rooms with fully-fitted shared kitchens, together with some six bedroom flats with shared showers and kitchens.

The short terraces are town-houses, housing eight students, sharing showers, kitchens and social space which will replicate modern city dwelling.  The chimneys on the town houses, which are conduits for flues rather than open fireplaces, will be picked out in gold – the college colour.

The egg-shaped Langwith Centre is a single-storey building providing social space, in which it is planned to accommodate a bar for both Langwith and Goodricke students a common room and a fully-fitted launderette linked to the University network, so that you can remotely monitor the progress of your laundry as it washes and dries!

The accommodation is accessible, with lifts to all floors in the larger blocks.  Secure cycle-parking and recycling centres are scattered about the College.

Overlooking the central vista and with a variety of landscaping around each court, the College connects with the landscape, providing pleasant views and outdoor spaces for students.  The bus interchange with bus services linking to the rest of the University (free of charge) and on into the City is just at the north of the College.
