York is a world-class university, a position it has achieved in under 45 years since it was founded in 1963. We have the highest average score in the UK for teaching quality, and are ranked 6th for the quality of our research. We are in the THES world top 50 for biomedicine and the top 100 for arts and humanities. In 2006 we won a Queens Anniversary Prize for Higher Education and were designated (with the City of York) as one of the Chancellor of the Exchequer's Science Cities.
The University is growing – exciting new developments include the Hull York Medical School, the York Management and Law Schools, the Institute for Effective Education, the York Neuroimaging Centre, the York JEOL Nanocentre, the Humanities Research Centre, the Institute for the Public Understanding of the Past and the Centre for Applied Human Rights. In fact we have major investments and initiatives in all aspects of the University of York's work at the moment – in research, teaching, knowledge transfer and facilities across the Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities. In addition we are about to launch a major expansion of the campus, doubling the physical size of the University and providing new facilities for all our departments, research centres, colleges, libraries, sports and arts centres over the next 10-15 years.
Each of our areas of expertise is looked after by a senior member of staff and these web pages explain how we organise these responsibilities. The latest news about our progress can be found on the News and Events pages or via the Communications Office. I hope you enjoy browsing the whole University website. You will see what we are all proud of – York is a highly successful and friendly university with great people. Come and visit us in York.
