Posted on 31 October 2022

Welcome to your student news summary of key things happening across the University this week.

UoY community update

Industrial action update
Last week, the University and College Union (UCU) announced that two of its national ballots came out in favour of industrial action across many UK universities. We respect our colleagues’ rights to take part in action, but understand that our students will be concerned about any impact on their studies. Our priority is making sure we have the right support and procedures in place to minimise any potential impact, and to mitigate any lost learning opportunities as a result.

The UCU will meet on Thursday 3 November to decide their next steps, and we will share further details with you as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will keep our web pages up to date to answer any questions you may have.

1. Come to the Global Opportunities Fair

Find out how to apply for opportunities to study, work and volunteer abroad at our Global Opportunities Fair on Thursday 3 and Friday 4 November. Speak to staff, meet York students who have been abroad, and discover more about independent travel opportunities from international volunteering organisations. Register your place at the Global Opportunities Fair.

2. Where did I read that thing? Academic skills workshop

Have you ever found a perfect quote for your work, but can’t remember where it’s from? Join the academic skills team on 1 November to discover strategies you can use for keeping track of your reading, as well as the variety of reference management software available to help you.  Register for your free place, and browse our range of other academic skills sessions.

3. Creativity Lab launch

Have you ever wanted to learn more about digital creativity, but unsure where to start? Join SIGN and the Library team for the launch of their new Creativity lab on 1 November. From VR headsets to Augmented Reality, come along and explore the lab’s state of the art equipment on offer, and find out more about their available services, support and activities over a coffee with the team. Find out more about the lab.

4. Do it poorly? Advice to combat procrastination

Are you putting off that piece of work? We know that the pressures of university life can encourage procrastination and form mental blocks between you and starting work. For help, read our top tips on beating procrastination.

5. Using personal electrical items in residences

In order to keep our buildings as safe as possible for all residents, it is important that students have any personal electric items tested for electrical safety by University teams. Items can include laptops, chargers, USB adaptors, and more. Find out when your nearest on-campus testing session will be.
