Welcome to your taught postgraduate student news summary of key things happening across the University this week.

UoY community update

Exceptional circumstances affecting assessment - policy update
The process where you can request to defer or resit an assessment due to exceptional circumstances has been updated. You can now self-certify without the need for evidence for a maximum of three assessments per academic year. Read about Exceptional circumstances affecting assessment.

Avoid a parking penalty
If you drive to campus, help us to maintain strong positive links with our local community by considering others when you park. You risk receiving a parking penalty if you block pathways and residents’ driveways in the local area. Please use campus car parks or consider alternative ways to travel to campus. You could check if you’re eligible for a student parking permit.

1. Feeling a little homesick? You’re not alone

The excitement of the start of term may have died down and the realities of academic work may mean that you’re wanting the comforts of home right now. Don’t worry - homesickness is very common among students and there are ways to get through it. Try our seven tips to beat homesickness. One of our tips is to sign up for Student Connect, which has now opened for Autumn Term. Join our popular scheme that matches you with other students looking to meet new people. What are you waiting for?

2. Refine your study skills

Keep one step ahead with more study skills sessions starting this week. On Wednesday, a workshop on Academic Googling will help you hone your search skills. And starting on Thursday, our Essential Spreadsheets course will teach you how to exploit Excel and Google Sheets for storing and analysing data, and also for working collaboratively. Browse and book onto forthcoming academic skills sessions.

3. SPOTLIGHT: Support for students with a disability

If you have a disability, learning difficulty or long-term health condition that has an impact on your ability to study, our Disability Services team is here to help. We know that each person’s disability can affect them in different ways so the support we offer is flexible and tailored to you. We can arrange academic support and adjustments as well as advise on possible funding. Find out how the Disability Services team can help you.

4. Help us achieve our sustainability goals

Would you like to develop a better understanding of sustainability in the workplace and also support the University in achieving sustainability goals? By volunteering to be a Green Impact Project Assistant, you will be assigned to a department at the University to help them achieve a Green Impact award. Application deadline: Friday 21 October.
