ReCSS Interdisciplinary Research Groups Funding Scheme 2017-18

Posted on 27 September 2017

The Research Centre for Social Sciences is seeking to support innovative research ideas that need detailed exploration. Deadline 16 October 2017.

Following last year’s successful round of funding, the Research Centre for Social Sciences (ReCSS) is seeking to support innovative research ideas that need detailed exploration. Networks should comprise staff and PGR students from at least two Social Sciences departments, although staff and PGR students from outside the Faculty can be involved, and they must have an interdisciplinary question or issue at their core. The form of activity can be of any type, including both ‘closed’ meetings and reading groups for those involved, open seminars and discussions, forms of public engagement, activities focused on generating web content, and we encourage creative and experimental proposals.

Awards of up to £2,500 can be requested by faculty from at least two different Social Sciences departments and applications are welcome for both smaller and larger amounts. We envisage an upper limit of around 4 awards being made depending on overall demand. An application should be sent to rcss-admin@york.ac.uk by 16 October 2017 covering the following:

i. Title
ii. Name of lead applicant (contact for this award)
iii. Description of project and rationale for the application, including medium to longer term outputs
iv. Costs in brief
v. Planned activities, including meetings in ReCSS
vi. List of Faculty, PGR students and departments involved in the application
vii. Supporting statement from the lead applicant's DRC chair. If there is matched funding from the Department or other sources, please specify this in this part of the application. If a department has more than one application with a lead applicant in this round, the DRC Chair is asked to rank the applications.

Awards can cover a range of expenses including travel and subsistence for visitors, catering and other support for workshops/events, and employment of casual staff where it can be shown that this is the most effective way to undertake the work. Successful applicants will be notified in the week commencing October 23 2017 and awards must be spent in full by 31 July 2018.

Success in the previous round of funding does not preclude successful application in this round.

Creative ideas are welcome and we encourage:
 Ideas that raise the profile of ReCSS and Social Sciences research within and beyond York
 Use of ReCSS space and facilities
 Engagement with disciplines outside the Social Sciences.
 Engagement with external organisations – seminars, meetings, collaborations, data/results sharing.
 Website or other development of tools or resources with a public presence or research application.
 Other creative uses of resources that establish links or activities with groups and institutions outside the university or which bring such groups onto the campus.
 Linkages to emerging ESRC strategic priority areas discussed in FRG:
o Governance & the future of liberal democracy
o Automation, AI & robotics
