Learning from HRDs: Chhauppadi – a menstrual taboo in rural Nepal

Friday 2 March 2018, 1.00PM

Speaker(s): Anima Poudel, Centre for Applied Human Rights (University of York)

Women's rights and youth activist Anima Poudel discusses chhaupadi, a centuries long discriminatory practice against women and girls during their menstrual periods and postpartum periods that is still practiced in remote rural areas of Nepal. How does this practice affect on women's and girls' ability to enjoy their rights? What can be done to promote women's rights in traditional rural communities?

Anima is currently undertaking a 6-month fellowship with the Centre for Applied Human Rights (University of York) under the auspices of the Protective Fellowship Scheme for Human Rights Defenders at Risk.
