Self harm and suicide - using routine data and collaboration to increase awareness and aid prevention

MRC Logo Med

Thursday 12 January 2017, 1.00PM to 4.00pm

Speaker(s): Jenny Ness & Keith Waters

The centre for self-harm and suicide prevention research was officially launched in August 2013 by Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, from where the East Midlands Self-harm and suicide prevention Research Network (EM-SRN) also operates. The centre aims to increase understanding and awareness around experiences of distress and despair, to embed research within practice, to inform procedures and policies, and to help others provide the best evidence-based services.

The centre is conducting a wide range of research studies, including one major long term programme funded by the Department of Health. The EM-SRN was established to share knowledge and experiences, and to encourage further joined-up working – it is a network and discussion forum for all professionals and organisations working with people in crisis who may self-harm or attempt suicide, providing a single point of contact for all professionals which facilitates the sharing and implementation or research and best practice.

Keith Waters (Centre Director) and Jenny Ness (Research Project Manager) will present a range of research evidence, in particular data from Emergency Department admissions, and discuss with attendees how practitioners – including social workers – can use research findings and evidence to increase their awareness of the issues and identification of risks. Delegates will have the opportunity to reflect on the evidence and findings presented through interactive group work as part of the afternoon.

For subscribing organisations this is a Adult &Children's Services event.

For others there is a fee of £95
