The recruitment process

I actually applied for my job whilst I was still travelling in Peru! I was very fortunate that they let me interview over Skype and submit my Excel and written test by email. I applied on the day of the deadline.

My career history

I completed a 3 month part time internship in the trusts team at the British Red Cross in London from November 2009 - February 2010.

I then moved to Cancer Research UK where I interned in the corporate partnerships team for another 3 months, February 2010 - April 2010.

Alongside these internships I worked as a sales consultant near my home in Essex.

I took a year out to go travelling, returning in February 2011 and starting my current role at the British Red Cross.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I would like to either move on to new business or move into the CSR world.

My advice to students considering work

Don't Panic! Everything will work out - you will have developed so many skills, it's just about recognising these. Make the most of the opportunities at York, volunteer, get involved, sign up to everything and just build up your range - people want to employ people who demonstrate personality as well as academic achievement.

What I do

My work as the corporate partnerships assistant is quite varied. I help on some of our large accounts, manage some small accounts of my own, help on new business proposals and again, submit my own. I am also responsible for recruiting and managing interns on a rolling basis. I help with the monthly finance reconciliation and lead the team on our database system.

Skills I use and how I developed them

I had completed two internships in the fundraising sector, one of which was at the Red Cross which enhanced my application.

Degree skills:
My job involves a lot of lateral thinking, pulling together ideas and reports from a massive selection of information. It also involves research and lots of investigation - so my History degree helps a lot.

Extracurricular skills:
I have gained the skills I need through my internships mainly, you gain so much from the projects you are given in structured internships.

What I like most

The excitement of working on a new proposal and knowing that what I do will contribute to the incredible work of the Red Cross.

What I like least

It involves a lot of spreadsheets, and in the assistants role your work can vary considerably week to week, sometimes it's very quiet and others manic!

What would I change? I would like to gain some experience in a smaller charity to get a wider breadth of fundraising experience.
