A day in the life of a Teacher of History in the United Kingdom
My career goals when I graduated
Leadership role within school
My career history
Promotions within my first school. Currently head of year 12
What has helped my career to progress
Experience of schools. Willingness to be adventurous and commit to new things
Courses taken since graduation
PGCE, currently enrolled on MEd
Where I hope to be in 5 years
There are plenty of opportunities available to progress in teaching.
My advice to students considering work
Look into getting experience sooner rather than later - it gives you much more to talk about in applications.
Happy to talk about applying for PGCE, happy to talk about experiences in schools
What I do
Teaching history to secondary school students - from the skills of History in Year 7 to the academic demands of A Level and GCSE.
Skills I use and how I developed them
BA History from York, followed by an PGCE and MEd at Newcastle. Experience wise - YSIS and the SAS scheme obviously helped a lot.
My undergraduate study prepared me for a Masters level course.
Teamwork, communication, organisation
What I like most
I love working with young peole - it is very rewarding.
What I like least
Workload is intense.
