A day in the life of a Business Analyst in the United Kingdom

How I found out about the job

Prospects website

The recruitment process

Skype Interview followed by a face to face interview.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to stay at the firm for a long time, helping them grow, and creating my own job role as possible with this growth.

My advice to students considering work

- Get experience early (internships, jobs) - even if they are free will be worth it.
About this sector: Learn to do things clients will like - data visualisation is very in right now, http://d3js.org/ will make you valuable - edit your own and make a portfolio. Ditto SQL, its dead simple to learn so take the time!

My advice about working in my industry

Learn to do things clients will like - data visualisation is very in right now, http://d3js.org/ will make you valuable - edit your own and make a portfolio. Ditto SQL, its dead simple to learn so take the time!

What I do

I work in a client facing role. I liaise with clients and developers, as well as database management. I spend most days liaising with clients, writing SQL and html based data visualisations for a variety of clients.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
- Writing SQL/javacsript/html/css/d3/R (Learned on Job as I went with little formal training (learn by play is always the most effective learning!))
- Client facing skills and project management (mentored by peers)

What I like most

I work in a small team (6) in a small company (<50) and we have big ambition. I know everyone well and it's a great environment. I learn more every day about technical aspects, as well as more generic personal aspects. I am encouraged to learn and try new things - my job role is loosely defined and I am rewarded and my work is recognised.

What I like least

It is high pressure at times, tight deadlines, security issues that can have major implications.
