A day in the life of a VP Engineering in the United States

Where I hope to be in 5 years

At Caremerge, we are making a product which could improve the standard of care among in health organization including senior homes, hospitals etc. If we are able to achieve success, it would be one of the greatest achievements of my life. We would be able to touch so many lives with the product that it would be amazing.

My advice to students considering work

Keep yourself up to date with the cutting edge. In our industry, we are not limited by geographical boundaries. So even though it may seem that latest developments have no potential in your local market but it could open up huge opportunities for you across the globe.

After my Masters I moved back to my home country yet I ended up in a company based in USA.

My advice about working in my industry

Keep yourself up to date with the cutting edge. In our industry, we are not limited by geographical boundaries. So even though it may seem that latest developments have no potential in your local market but it could open up huge opportunities for you across the globe.

After my Masters I moved back to my home country yet I ended up in a company based in USA.

What I do

I work at CareMerge in Pakistan as a Product Development Team Leader managing 15 members of staff. CareMerge is a Chicago-based company and I sometimes get the opportunity to travel to Chicago for work. My job is very relevant to my studies. I am responsible for all facets of our product which includes requirement understanding, technology decisions, team delegation and writing code. It's a fun job that can be nerve-wracking as I make decisions which could make or break the product.

Much of the research I did at York has practical implications in my day to day job. We use many tools we learned during the programme in our processes at CareMerge.

My career aspirations from this point are to make CareMerge the leading care coordination platform. We are on the verge of something fairly big and being the team leader, there is huge responsibility on my shoulders, which I love.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Extracurricular skills:
Web Development. Obviously the basics of my skills were taught in University of York, however I supplemented those by spending my extra time readying technical books, online material etc. I tried to keep myself updated with cutting edge in our field.

What I like most

The company culture is very progressive. We don't have any managers. Our engineers are the most important assets of the team. This is amazing. It's mind blowing to work in such landscape. Making effort to devise good engineering solutions is rewarding. You don't waste time dealing with bureaucracy.

What I like least

We have offices in USA and Pakistan, so travelling is a bit tough.
