A day in the life of a Legal secretary in China

The recruitment process

After making an application to Baker and McKenzie, I had a face-to-face interview with the HR manager and the manager of the company. I also had a written English test.

My career history

Since I completed my course in 2007, I worked as a secretary in a foreign company for 2 years. In 2010 I have got an offer of legal secretary from Baker and McKenzie in Shanghai.

My advice to students considering work

To stand out from overseas returners, students should gain more overseas work experience. For example, they can try to stay in the UK to work after graduation on a Tier 1 post study visa.

What I do

As a legal secretary, not only do I need to handle general administrative and secretarial duties, I also work on translation and provide support as required by lawyers.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Degree skills:
My English skills honed during my overseas education are very useful at my current role.

What I like most

Apart from using my English skills, I have also gained an exposure in law, which allows me to gain a lot of legal expertise.

What I like least

Sometime I have to work overtime and under great pressure.
