A day in the life of a Managing Director in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

Marketing and Sales Consultancy

What do you do?

Marketing and Sales Advisory Services and researching and writing Digital Content

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

After graduating I chose a fast track Graduate Training Programme for an employer in Financial Services. I then had a brilliant career mentor who helped me develop a career in Sales and Marketing, for which I was well qualified, had the right skills, and enjoyed immensely.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

In the middle part of my career I realised I’d be successful working in consultancy and have done so since then.

Describe your most memorable day at work

I love
-organising and fronting business conferences.
-running workshops, seminars, doing presentations and pitches, and training sessions.
-mentoring and coaching, and nurturing talent.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

The challenges in consulting include
-keeping up to speed with business trends.
-you’re only as good as your last job.
-finding and keeping clients that give you regular income.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

I now work from home, but previously worked in buzzy and noisy offices with high levels of challenge and creativity.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

Acting, stage management and props sourcing for a Uni Theatre Company, which were a great background for my work in sales, marketing and communications and for my confidence in business environments.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Keep working!

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Work with York Uni Mentors and get as wide a variety of work experience as you can.
Keep a close eye on your work/life balance and your health and wellbeing.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Business Management, Strategy, Change Management, Sales, Marketing, Communications, Consultancy, Advisory Services, Design and Creativity, Digital Marketing, Digital Content.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?

I’m working with the York Uni Alumni Team on the ‘Mentally Fit York’ Programmes, for which I’m also sponsoring a PhD Research Scholarship.
