A day in the life of a Solicitor in the United Kingdom
When I graduated I wanted nothing to do with commercial law. It was only when I started working in industry that I started to enjoy it.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
I work for TLT, a national commercial law firm.
What do you do?
I specialise in real estate litigation. This involves acting for landlords and tenants in connection with disputes arising as a result of breaches of lease.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
After university I went through a couple of jobs outside of the legal sector. However, I was always drawn back to law, specifically litigation.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
Absolutely. When I graduated I wanted nothing to do with commercial law. It was only when I started working in industry that I started to enjoy it.
Describe your most memorable day at work
After a long, drawn out court process which involved several injunction applications and hearings, I was successful in obtaining judgment for my client.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
It is a fast moving sector, and led heavily by client objectives. It is therefore essential to ensure you fully understand what the client is looking to achieve.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Fast paced, cooperative and very supportive.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
I was a signatory for various societies. Managing the various administration tasks alongside my degree helped me plan my days more efficiently to ensure deadlines were met. This is crucial in my industry as you often have to manage large caseloads with various court deadlines.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Become a leading lawyer in my field, both regionally and nationally.
What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?
Prepare. Don’t just send applications on a quantity basis. Make sure you give each application sufficient time.
