A day in the life of a Executive Director Policy and Campaigns in the United Kingdom
Campaigning is filled with frustration and disappointment, but the determination to fight for change is fundamental to the work.
Briefly describe the organisation you work for
We work with deaf children, their families, decision makers, partner organisations and
professionals, to break down these barriers and transform lives.
What do you do?
Lead a team of a formidable campaigning function with a track record of success including 34 UK wide policy, advocacy and campaigns staff removing barriers for deaf children and young people.
Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?
A clear sense of injustice of the exclusion of children from the education system.
Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?
It's exactly what I wanted to be working on.
Describe your most memorable day at work
When a parent of a disabled child personally thanked me for my work on implementing the Disability Discrimination Act in education.
Are there any challenges associated with your job?
Campaigning is filled with frustration and disappointment, but the determination to fight for change is fundamental to the work.
What’s your work environment and culture like?
Professional, committed, relentlessly optimistic.
What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?
Drama Society. Although the theatre company didn't make it, I still call on a lot of those skills of creating a good show.
What would you like to do next with your career?
Keep fighting for change.
