A day in the life of a SEM Global Analyst in the United Kingdom

Try to get into something that sparks your enthusiasm - that is very important and quite obvious through interviews. You might get the job even if lacking technical knowledge because of enthusiasm displayed.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

It's very well structured, multicultural, ethical

What do you do?

I manage the search engine marketing of multiple markets. This involves strategic thinking, drawing insights from big data to ensure spend is allocated efficiently, implementation of strategy, monitoring, testing and iteration, focusing on the achievement of business objectives (looking at the KPIs associated with each of these objectives).

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I was always drawn to logical thinking and the creativity liberty offered by the digital space - the digital marketing module I undertook in my master's helped me understand how this inclination and skill can be applied in a work environment. After graduating, I searched on indeed.co.uk for jobs in this area and got hired at a media agency on an entry level performance marketing role, allowing me to gain exposure into the different branches of online advertising. As an EEA national, there weren't a lot of documents needed. The interview probed my interest with some very basic technical questions, ensuring that I know what the role entitled and that I'm willing to undertake what was needed. Much of the learning was done online post-graduation, as all material needed is freely available, with Google offering interactive courses that help you understand intricacies of the platforms and use cases.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

No, I focused on what kept me engaged through my degree and worked my way up through continuously learning.

Describe your most memorable day at work

I think there are more memorable days at work, but I'll describe one. I've been shying away from speaking up and contributing to strategy, as I had to do this surrounded by people with much more experience than I had and people holding high functions in companies. Being put in the position where having to present my own take at potential avenues for a client at Google's offices in front of higher management from my company, the client and Google's experts was a success and my input was recognised as a valuable perspective. I've learned that there is no right or wrong, and all views should be expressed for a team to get to the best possible outcome.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I've been involved in a project aimed at the increase in architectural awareness from a historical perspective. Having to focus of a specific target (making students register to the competition), contributing to the web design and coming up with tactics for achieving goals definitely gave me a comprehensive overview of marketing in a work context.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

First, don't lose hope or self confidence over getting some refusals from jobs you've applied for. There are so many moving parts that contribute to getting the desired position, and that makes it very difficult understanding reasons for refusal. Perseverance for the win.
Second, try to get into something that sparks your enthusiasm - that is very important and quite obvious through interviews. You might get the job even if lacking technical knowledge because of enthusiasm displayed.
Third, understand what the job entails and prepare for questions coming your way. It might happen that you don't know how to answer some, acknowledge your doubts, show interest and ask if correct, or what is the correct answer.
Fourth, be yourself in any situation - we're all humans. Charisma goes a long way.
