A day in the life of a Performance Associate in the United Kingdom

Just because you studied a certain subject doesn’t necessarily mean you need to do that specific field, your degree will provide you a lot of skills that are transferable to any profession.

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

I work for a recruitment company that focuses on mid to senior level hires across HR, Change and IT. We focus on both the UK and international hiring.

What do you do?

I assist with hiring and help with 1st stage interviews. I’m responsible for coaching and mentoring all junior level hires from 0-6 months, ensuring that they hit targets. I'm involved with training as well as performance management.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

I previously worked in recruitment for graduates and enjoyed the preparation and advice I was able to give to those first looking for jobs.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Yes I thought I would work for the government.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Having the most amount of hires in my first month of joining my previous company.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

Yes, especially with coaching, it’s definitely challenging to get people to see your way and having to be quite honest with people when they are underperforming.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

I work in an office where it’s semi professional in terms of clothing. It’s a great environment where as long as you’re working hard people aren’t watching you. I have a good level of work life balance and an fortunate to have flexible work hours.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I was in a few societies, it was more the social aspect that I took away. Especially joining the workplace it’s really important you get involved with activities that work holds that’s not work related.

What would you like to do next with your career?

I’d like to be promoted and the opportunity to get some professional qualifications in the near future.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Just because you studied a certain subject doesn’t necessarily mean you need to do that specific field, your degree will provide you a lot of skills that are transferable to any profession. Make sure when you’re interviewing to really show direction and why you specifically chose to apply to the company you’re interviewing at. People like to see individuals who have thought thing out and are good decision makers, make sure you provide good reasoning behind your answers. Always ask questions at the end of every interview.
