A day in the life of a Litigation Paralegal in the United Kingdom

Briefly describe the organisation you work for

A specialist libel and privacy law firm. It is also a multi-disciplinary practice with expertise in advisory, cyber, and intelligence.

What do you do?

Assist in the efficient running of litigation. I also conduct legal research, interact with solicitors and clients.

Reflecting upon your past employment and education, what led you to your current career choice?

Wanting to work in a profession focussed on people. I also wanted to utilise the skills gained at University and do something intellectually stimulating.

Is your current job sector different from what you thought you would enter when you graduated?

Very different as libel and privacy is a niche area of law. My main interest is in civil law. I have worked or volunteered in the areas of property, welfare, commercial, and education.

Describe your most memorable day at work

Having a claim heard in the Court of Appeal. This was an important breach of confidence claim and the first instance decision was reversed.

Are there any challenges associated with your job?

It can be extremely busy but very rewarding.

What’s your work environment and culture like?

Very good - personally I enjoy a smaller organisation.

What extracurricular activities did you undertake at university and what transferable skills did you develop through these?

I was Vice President of the Karting Club and Captain of the University team. I also learnt valuable skills by undertaking the York Award.

What would you like to do next with your career?

Qualify as a barrister.

What top tips do you have for York students preparing for today’s job market and life after graduation?

Enjoy your University experience, the serious stuff comes later. Take advantage of the opportunities you have at University.

What topics from students are you happy to answer questions on?

Anything about the sector really. Have particular expertise regarding the Bar and litigation.
