A day in the life of a Analyst Consultant in the United Kingdom

How I looked for work

First place I looked was the university careers gateway (where I found Helios). However, most applications were done through JobLab.

There are a lot of recruitment websites nowadays specifically targeting good graduates. They make applications very easy so take advantage.

How I found out about the job

Careers website (University of York)

My career goals when I graduated

I knew I wanted to be a consultant (or something related to running a business) for a small/medium business.

My career history

My first job was a door-to-door charity fundraiser. From there I did the odd jobs at the university and briefly worked as a sales consultant at Next.

I also did a few internships at law firms.

What has helped my career to progress

York Community Consulting!!

The society is very professional and gave me the right skills, knowledge and contacts for the job. I highly recommend doing at least one project with them if you're interested in consulting, law or business.

My advice to students considering work

You'll have to go through A LOT of applications; a lot of rejections. The key is to keep applying and continuously improving your application/interview skills.

If you think you can do a job, apply! Don't be intimidated by high salaries or the fancy name of a job. I thought consulting at Helios was beyond me but that's the job I got. If you want the job, what do you have to lose by applying?

My advice about working in my industry

Network! Consultants sell their knowledge and expertise. But no one can know everything, even if they consult in a minor area. The best consultants I've met know the right person to question or collaborate with.

Contacting me

I am happy to help for any aspect; professional and personal.

Looking forward to hearing from you. :)

What I do

I am a Analyst Consultant at Helios (aviation consultancy).

My job is to help organisation in the aviation industry achieve their goals and/or solve problems. I mostly work with the European Union to create a Single European Sky.

Skills I use and how I developed them

Problem solving, attention to detail and communication skills are a must. Luckily they teach all that at law school!

What I like most

Playing an active role in cutting pollution of various types. Plus there's a lot of travelling to Europe and beyond!

What I like least

Some days a very busy with others too busy. But I've never left work after 5:30.
