I applied via email after hearing that there was a potential opening - I was then invited to an interview and was given the job.

My career history

Started in October last year as Claims Handler, working beneath the Operations Manager who supervised all of my work. Finished probation early in January and was given a raise to reflect the fact that my work no longer needed to be supervised and have subsequently taken over dealing with all claims.

Where I hope to be in 5 years

I hope to gain all available qualifications, with a view to either becoming a loss adjuster (and ultimately owning my own firm) or progressing in the broker field and becoming a Director/owning my own commercial insurance brokers.

My advice to students considering work

Exhaust all avenues looking for jobs, and keep on top of all applications you have sent off. I remember having a spreadsheet with all my applications and it helped me keep track of where I was with all of them and how many I was still in with a chance with.

My advice about working in my industry

Apply everywhere - not just for the graduate schemes that the big name insurers run. Find all of your local brokers as well as checking smaller, less well-known insurers' websites. Once you get your foot on the ladder and build up your knowledge it is down to you how far you'll get.

What I do

I handle all liability, property, and other types of claim from start to finish, including uninsured loss recovery. I deal daily with clients, insurers, solicitors, loss adjusters, and other specialists.

Skills I use and how I developed them

The LLB I gained showed that I had an understanding of legal concepts and some strong knowledge of laws relevant to insurance law (e.g. laws of tort and negligence, contract law etc) These were invaluable in putting me above other applicants.

Extracurricular skills:
I had insurance-specific knowledge gained from past part-time work.

What I like most

It is challenging, with a lot of specific knowledge to be picked up. I find the constant learning curve rewarding and enjoy using freshly learned techniques/knowledge to gain the best possible outcome for clients. Face-to-face contact with clients and loss adjusters also offers a great opportunity to build relationships.

What I like least

There is a large amount of time required to proceed with qualifications (e.g. to gain the ACII qualification you have to have worked in insurance for five years, regardless of your knowledge).
