Rob is a robot technician with a wide range of skills which are applicable to robotics: 3D design and printing, laser cutting, circuit design, machining and programming (with a strong preference for Python).
Rob studied mathematics at the University of Oxford. He was a teacher, who then changed career paths and focused on robots. For this he completed a postgraduate degree and PhD at the University of York. His PhD focused on hybrid robot locomotion (moving over obstacles) and the robot he built for it is called Cylindabot. He then worked as a researcher on the ARE project before deciding that his preference lies in hardware and was employed as a technician at ISA.
Outside of work, Rob is interested in circus, bouldering and boardgames. Within circus, he juggles, performs magic, spins fire, lifts people in the air (acro) and twirls around on fabric (aerial silks). He has also run several juggling conventions in York and Oxford.
