After graduating in 1968 stayed at Cambridge to do research in the Psychological Laboratory on animal discrimination learning (PhD, 1971). Then held research posts at the University of Sussex and Dalhousie University in Canada before coming to York in 1975, just a few months before the Psychology Department admitted its first undergraduates.
