How the introduction of Combined Authorities in England has influenced public attitudes to democracy and political participation
Combined authorities are the latest in a long line of regional government reform in England. These bodies, in which local authorities can pool resources under the supervision of a directly elected mayor, were meant to revolutionise how people felt about politics in the country. Is there any evidence that they have achieved this? My research examines how public attitudes towards democracy and engagement have changed in places with combined authorities compared to those without them. I will analyse whether they have improved matters such as trust, satisfaction, and turnout. I’ll also explain why this is the case and compare to regional bodies elsewhere to see what can be improved.
