Title of Research:

How does conspiracism relate to representative democracy?

Brief overview of research topic:

Conspiracy theories pose a particularly difficult political problem for democracies - politicians may be tempted to pander to the conspiratorial fears of their constituents, but doing so may undermine trust in democratic institutions and pave the way for tyranny. In this project, I am aiming to develop an original account of the relationship between conspiracism and representative democracy, showing that conspiracism is not an external threat, but is in fact immanent to representative democracy.
