RIDERS network

RIDERS (Research in Interactive Drama Environments, Role-play and Storytelling) is an EPSRC-funded research network led by Ruth Aylett and Sandy Louchart at Heriot Watt. Monday's workshop, held in the Computer Science building on the Heslington East campus, was the second meeting of the network.

The programme consisted of a morning session on role-play led by Debbie Manship from Role Call, and an afternoon session on storytelling and narratology led by Richard Walsh. The morning session was a practical exploration of the principles of interactive narrative improvization, based upon stock higher education scenarios.

The afternoon session focussed on a narratological approach to interactive storytelling and an interactive user, experimanting with two models of interactive narrative:

  • event-based, choice among logical possibilities
  • narration-based, constraint as stimulus to creativity
