Beyond the Frame: Contemporary Cuban Art

Beyond the Frame

Wednesday 2 May 2012, 5.00PM to 7.00pm

This spring, a major exhibition of contemporary Cuban art opens in London and then travels to Glasgow (see http://www.cubabeyondtheframe.com/Site/Home.html for details). Representing the work of around 20 of Cuba’s leading artists, the exhibition is intended to raise awareness of the case of five Cubans imprisoned in the United States for over 13 years, known as the Miami 5. The exhibition is being supported by artists in the UK, such as Mona Hatoum and Susan Hiller, who have also donated work to it. Two of the Cuban artists, Lesbia Vent Dumois and Gustavo Díaz Sosa will be speaking about their contribution to the exhibition and the human rights campaign on behalf of the Miami 5 together with Professor Dawn Ades (University of Essex), the UK’s foremost scholar of modern Latin American Art.
